Urumqi As the capital city of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Urumqi is located in a green oasis between the lofty ice-capped Bogda Peak, the vast Salt Lake in the east, the rolling pine-covered Southern hill and the alternating fields and sand dunes of Zunggar Basin in the northwest. It is regarded as the most remote city from any sea in the world at a distance of about 1,400 miles from the nearest coastline. In History Urumqi was an important town on the northern route of the Silk Road, a vast network of trade routes that also facilitated cultural exchanges throughout Eurasia. Urumqi is a great place to pick up some interesting craft items like ethnic clothing, embroidery, and jewelry. Other handicrafts include jade carvings, Kashgar carpets, exotic knives, wood crafts, and ethnic musical instruments.

The Flaming Mountains Situated in the middle of the Turpan Basin, the Flaming Mountains are called Kiziltag by the local people, which mean "Red Mountains." The mountains stretch 62 miles from east to west and are 6.2 miles wide, ranging up to 1,640 feet in height. They are formed from russet sandstone, conglomerate and mudstone, which sparkle under the blazing sun. They contained the mountain pass to enter the city of Gaochang. Tourists who come to the Flaming Mountains are surprised to see that the valley called the Grape Valley is covered with a large belt of fresh green plants and is right at the foot of the Flaming Mountains.

Turfan & Grape Valley Looking at the Flaming Mountains in the distance from the city of Turpan, one can see nothing but glowing, barren, red sand. But the Grape Valley of the Flaming Mountains, fifteen kilometers from the city center, is a world of unique beauty, presenting a striking contrast with the hot, dry and barren outside.

Cushioned by green grass and graced with green trees, the valley is a world of green wit brooks, canals and sparkling springs; there is a poetic flavor to the idyllic beauty of the valley. Scattered everywhere in the valley are trees:
mulberry, peach, apricot, apple, pomegranate, pear, fig, walnut, elm, poplar and willow; also watermelons and muskmelons, making the valley into a 'garden of one hundred flowers'; in spring and an 'orchard of one hundred kinds of fruits'; in summer. In the valley there is a reception center where dense grapevines interweave with each other and winding paths lead to secluded places with clusters of grapes within easy reach.

The Grape Valley has more than 400hectares of cultivated land, 220 hectares of which is grape growing area. Grapes growing in the valley are of several strains, including the seedless white, rose-pink, mare-teat, black, Kashihar, bijiagan and suosuo. There is a fruit winery producing several kinds of wines and canned grapes.

Pick up Sweet! During your visit in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, there are lots of things to do. But I think the most enjoyable thing is fruit picking, for Xinjiang is famous “homeland of the fruit”. When you pick fruits in the Grape Valley, scattered everywhere in the valley are trees: mulberry, peach, apricot, apple, pomegranate, pear, fig, walnut, elm, poplar and willow; also watermelons and muskmelons, making the valley into a 'garden of one hundred flowers'.
